The most famous of all is possibly Raphael; amongst his other painting he made designs for tapestries that were made and hung in the huge houses of the wealthy in the sixteenth century. Interestingly these were designed and drawn in reverse as they were then sewn from the back of the tapestry. One of his designs is hung on the wall of Knole House in Kent. It is stunning.
