It shows that it is charged, yet I don't have any cool air at all coming out. It has felt as though it were losing some charge over the years, but all of a sudden no cold air at all. The compressor seems to kick on and off every 3 or 4 seconds.

It is low on freon, have it checked completely for all leaks and repair it, if you just add freon it will do this again and possibly ruin the system more.

My husband is the mechanic in our family (but he is asleep - its nearly midnight here in Australia) however we have a mechanics business that specialises in Air Conditioning I work in the office and can give you a few ideas from what I have seen our clients facing with their cars when they come in...

You may have a blockage in the TX Valve or another area of the AC - you also dont say if you have any air coming out at all or if your getting warm air so its hard to give any kind of accurate diagnosis - with the description your giving my husband would say bring it in and let us have a look - my suggestion is go in to a mechanics that specialises in Air Conditioning and ask for a diagnosis - they hgave the equipment to check all the areas - it might even be your heater core or the evaporator that is playing up and pushing hot water through and giving you warm air and not cool.

You say its holding charge - Im wondering how you know this? Maybe your testing methods are not accurate - you may need a regas.

I know this hasnt been altogether helpful but my suggestion is go and see someone who specialises in this field - we dont charge to quote - when you ring around ask if they do charge to quote - some will some wont.

Good luck.

If it's kicking on and off that frequently, it is very low on refrigerant. have it checked out at the garage.
