I'm looking for a dress pattern, or some better way to alter my patterns. I have a hard time because my waist is much smaller than my bust, and my back is also smaller than my bust so it's hard to fit clothes to it.

I already bought the material, it's a non-stretch cotton/poly mix so I need a pattern that is severly tailored but with enough room in the bust and hips. I'm looking for a knee-length 50's style dress, but with much less of an A-line than the dresses had in that time. Same kind of top as this dress http://www.1sewingpatterns.com/images0/2902vb.jpg

Simplicity has a "retro" section of patterns....in those, they made everything for "hour glass" figures !!!

But with whatever you do, you can add darts to the back to custom fit your body !!! But also too, don't make it too fitting.....you want the bust and waist to fit nicely and flow at the hips...this makes any body type look very nice !!!!

Good luck !!!

I have the same bust trouble as you. You need to get a book about how to make a model of your figure. I have taken all my measurements and transferred them onto a cardboard cutout. This is the smallest clothing that will fit me perfectly. When I want new clothes, I pin my material up to the wall onto my cutout and draw the pattern with a marker. Then I sew it all together, perfect fit every time. I also take cheep (really cheep) clothes and rip the seems and resew for a custom fit. Find a book and do this.

You can alter any pattern. You will need help though...take the pattern and fit it to you body with pins. Darts will give you the shape you need in the front and back! It will be easier if you buy a pattern that is just about what you want and fits your bust...then take it in where needed! Hope this helps!

I think wrap dresses look good on that kind of shape. Or something tight but with a short jacket to tone down the bust while showing off the waist.
