the computer gets a signal from the crank and delays the signal to the coil so it sparks at the appropate time it takes into concederation engine speed and load yes i said delays it knows where the engine is and anticipates top dead center and rechecks its self every turn

The engine management system has an ECU (computer for want of a better word) which makes calcutations from various sensors around the engine. For instance there is a crankshaft speed sensor and often a camshaft sensor. A vacuum sensor to measure throttle opening. These would be the main parts which help control the advance.
