The "smell" of heat is coming from the underside of the driver's side. It seems to start to shimmy after about 15 to 20 minutes of steady driving. Brakes are new, radiator cap tight, no apparent leaks. When it starts to shimmy, I get a "feeling" that it want s to shut down. I don't know - when you drive a car for awhile, you get to know it, and can tell when something isn't right with it. Thanks for the answers so far. I had a suggestion from a "friend of a friend" that it could be a clogged catalytic converter. Wil probably have to get it checked out.

pop off you're brake master cylinder cap see if the rubber gasket on the lid is distorted if it is your fluid is contaminated this will cause this you will need to change a lot of the hydraulic system in the brake aria the shimmy and smell is coming from the brakes heating up

this is caused by the person working on the brakes either pushing the calipers back without opening the bleaders this can damage the antilock system or adding the wrong type brake fluid

I didn't see your other one...A "shimmy" is more for suspension and steering. Do you mean it tends to feel "rougher", like the engine is choking? Does it seem to slow down too, no matter how much you push on the gas?

If your answer to that is yes, then you do have classic symptoms for a catalytic converter being plugged up...

what does heat smell like???????

It could be your A\C, that gives a smell of mold.

It could be something stuck to your exhast system or engine , like a plastic bag, (happened to me). Smells toxic.

Could be fluid that spilled onto your engine or exhast.

Could be your heater core (which is a small radiator that is inside your car, that may be the start of a small pin hole leak ( this could be most likeley)

good luck

Beatrice... Stop trying to guess your problem and take the car to a qualified Mechanic.. guessing on a problem can be much more expensive in the long run then having it fixed...
the first thing that came to my mind was alos the cataletic converter...but that can btested as with many other things including your shimmy.
good luck.
