White signifies purity and innocence. Red signifies hardiness and valor. Blue signifies vigilance, perseverance and justice.

There was no meaning left by the Continental congress in 1777. The colors took on symolism in 1782 when the Great Seal was adopted.

Good question!

According to the book, "Our Flag," published by the House of Representatives, "White signifies Purity and Innocence; Red, Hardiness and Valor; Blue signifies Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice."

I hope that helps.
