I'm currently using a D-Link DI-624 wireless router. I thought that, by default, either computer would be able to see the other in "My Network Connections" or somewhere like that. Currently, neither computer can see the other at all. Curiously, they can both access my wireless network-enabled TIVO Series 2 box.

I'm sure there's a simple answer for this. Any takers?

P.S. By the way, my ethernet wired PC runs Windows Vista and my laptop runs Windows XP SP2 ...

The router just supplies the physical connection to the computers. The actual networking of two or more computers is done on the computers themselves

1st on both computers you want to name the workgroup. Name it the same on both computers.

2nd you want to turn on file and printer sharing on both computers.

3rd Make sure your firewalls are either turned off or configured to allow a network connection.

You probably left the firewall enabled on one or both of the machines, so they won't be able to talk to each other. You can turn off both firewalls on the network connections and should be able to see each other. If the firewalls are already disabled, try using the ping command to see if they can ping the others IP Address. This'll give you the first clue if they are capable of talking to each other.

Wireless routers are typically bridges, allowing everyone to see each other. There are sometimes firewalls included on the wireless routers - most of the modern ones have them. Check to make sure that you're not restricting the clients from talking to each other. For example, make sure that you don't have the clients on different IP address ranges and if so, make sure that you're not blocking one from seeing the other with your firewall rules. You could temporarily turn the firewall off or allow everything through while you test it. I suggest that you unplug from the Internet when you do this test, just to be 100% safe from someone hacking you while you are testing.

Once you figure out the problem, then you'll be able to take steps to fixing the problem.

Hope this helps,
WG

The solutions above are allright - purchase a router, set up a on the spot community , pc could be nonetheless under pressure in case you elect. My basically propose, becouse you opt to connect a wii, so i anticipate you're interested in playing video games online - purchase smth with good speed (they are industry as G, G+, N) take the netgear rangemaster N - it incredibly is going to be powerfull adequate to hold the conection for couple contraptions with impressive speed. If u opt to apply a dongle (adapter) to make your pc on the spot u might desire to keep in mind that they might desire to be compatibile inclusive of your router speed (so with G speed router you are going to be able to desire to have G speed dongle an so on) desire it incredibly is sensible:)
