I used to have a heater in my Aquarium but I took it out cause one of my goldfish burned himself on it and was darting around smashing into the sides of the tank. Since I don't have it in there he's fine now. Do I really need one or do i need a certain water temperature to avoid putting a heater in. One is a standard Goldfish the other is a Red fantailed Goldfish

No, there is no real need for a heater in a goldfish tank most of the time. They prefer cooler water and as long as the temperature isn't chenging radically in a short period of time they will be fine without a heater.

Goldfish don't need a heater. They can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, as low as 40 and as high as 80. Rapid change will be a problem. If it is 65 on a work day, but only 40 over the weekend, they would benefit from a heater to keep the temperature constant, or at the least, slow down the cooling and make it less of an increase once everyone is back Monday AM.

Goldfish are highly susceptible to a fatal disease called ich. Ich THRIVES below 70, to about 50. Ich can't tolerate extreme cold or extreme heat. If tropical fish get ich, the primary treatment is raise the temperature. If you keep your tanks around 70, you are just inviting ich to get your fish. Any fish.

Goldfish are funny. They not need a heater.
My Story; Once we were at this Hotel at a lake and the lobby was cold as they did not heat that area as how it was made (The rooms were heated). It was a Rustic look and in the center of the room was this rock water fountain. I walked over and look at the water and there were probably 100 small gold fish laying on the bottom, looked dead to me. I told the man; "I think your goldfish have bit the dust". He laughed and said; "They do that when it cold. Like hibernating. When the water warm up in summer they will start swimming around again"! ;-)

you dont know if he burned himself unless you had it up as far as it will go the heater wasent the reason he was darting arround check your water test it make sure its not got to high of ph because hes the deal k goldfish are cold water fish they dont need a heater but its better for them because ...let me explain see goldfish are cold water fish had my tank 3 years goldfish can get amuned to the heaters i keep mine about 72 it not only keeps the water temp stable but it helps keep down bateria in your tank .see when the water flexes it can cause your fish to get stressed out and allow them acceptable to ick .so it like this one min your temp might be 54 when its cold them 65 when its hot they dont like the flexuation also it causes they body to slow down if the waters too cold so i took out my heater my fish when crazy lost a few they hated the cold water they got ick so i put it in again and there just fine i think you should too k good luck its up to you keep it in all times i have left mine in for 3 years and my goldfish are happpyyyyyyy

Gold fish are naturally cold water fish and do not need a heater. If you want to heat the water it is okay, just keep it about 70-72 degrees. I used to raise gold fish, and I did keep it heated, but that was for my own comfort when cleaning the tank. Pick up a book on gold fish or look them up on the computer.

Goldfish usually are very tolerant to cold water. They are related to the fish that people keep in the ponds outside, and they have to survive very cold temperatures. Usually, you only want a heater if you are going to keep other types of fish in there with them.
