It is widely accepted that if you took all the wealth and divided it equally, within a comparitively short space of time, those who were rich would become rich again and those originally poor would again be poor.
It is why the situation is that way, the nature of the individual is predeposed to one or the other.

I will tell you a story that I read long ago in a Kannada monthly. A young boy, say 20 years old is sleeping under a tree on a hot summer afternoon. A middle aged person passing by sees him. Annoyed by the laziness of the youth, the man starts preaching the youth the importance of hard work. The youth asks" what do I get if I work hard?" The man says" you will get money". What should I do with the money" asks the youth. "You can buy wordly comforts. You will have people to attend to you. You can work at your will and rest at your will" says the middle aged man. What I am doing now asks the youth and goes into deep sleep.
Think for a while that had the boy accepted the advise of the elder, it is certain that he would have earned money and later he would have had all the worldly comforts but he would never have worked and slept at will.
The richer you become, the gap between your wants and needs becomes narrower and you become more active economically and physically. You will have all the comforts but practically no time to think of them. The richest man is perhaps the most active man in the world. The developed countries, where wants are near equal to means, are more active than poor countries.
This phenomenon is similar to chemistry as well. The elements that have electronic configuration nearee to that of an innert gas is highly active. Those who are nearer to the state of ultimate laziness are highly active. Those who are about to reach salvation or moksha are the most philosophically active people. Gold, our Indian government employees never aspire for ultimate laziness/promotion and hence are genuinely lazy. Even a tri acid mixture cannot react with gold. Any amount of inspiration will not make our Governent employees work. As you climb up in your career, you may take off from work at your will but you never do so. The CEOs, the Chief Justices, the Presidents of the countries etc have every opportunity to rest at will but they are the most active in their fields.
This is the reason why the rich becomes richer.

most poor people are bone idle here in the UK the state will look after them and those that aren't find it hard to get a job because every tom, dick and harry wants 'experience'. As for rich people we are in the middle of property/equity/industrialization bubble that will pop, until such a time expect to hear about huge bonuses for adequate performance by a CEO.
