If one is to believe that education is to learn knowledge, then why has it become imperative that the present times educational institutions are veering towards the thought that education is for gainful employment? If it is not so, then why are we seeing much and much less numbers are getting into research and study and more and more enrolling into those courses that assures one an immediate job?

Education is for gaining knowledge, for training the mind and for applying knowledge to deal with the problems and vicissitudes of life. It is not merely for getting employment. Specialized courses do exist where the ultimate objective is to gain proper employment in those areas.
The reason for the existence of so many educational institutions is firstly, the promoters and employees there themselves earn an income! Secondly, with the increase in population and the scarcity of jobs, higher qualifications are prescribed by some employers as a means of restricting the field to fewer candidates for employment.
Research and teaching, in some countries, do not pay as much as in other professions. This is indeed a sad situation. Besides, these areas attract people with specific aptitudes, and they are perhaps aware that their earnings would be less when they take up these professions.
