i have a compaq laptop with a belkin router.
my wireless connection says that it is "security-enabled wireless network (WPA)".
can people still hack into my hard drive remotely or do they need my actual laptop to get into it?
i DO have a firewall.... it came with my laptop

WPA is pretty solid. It could probably be hacked if you were to download a virus or something like that. If you want to feel more secure, set up a VPN, although I think it's more hassle than it's worth.

According to what you said, definitely people cannot hack into your Hard Disk but you could get infected with adware and spyware for sure even though it has a firewall and security enabled network.

A best approach you can do is to configure the firewall for the best functionality and then install an anti spyware and an antivirus software.

That would make the outside entities very difficult to attack you because of your wireless connectivity.

WPA is pretty secure. A firewall defintely helps and will keep the bulk of attacks at bay.

You will need to be cautious of spy ware and viruses. Spy ware can report certain info back to a source. A virus can create a "back door" into your system.

You should routinely scan for viruses and spyware (use something like Ad-aware PE from http://www.lavasoft.com).

WPA is very secure and hard to hack, if you use a strong pass phrase. Your WiFi is safe. People can only get on using your PC.

TIP: A router is the best Firewall, so turn off the one on your PC, it only slows it down.
