my boyfriend thinks he remembers a uk children's tv show when he was young (so 1980s) which had a hippo in it, which wore a pork-pie / bowler hat. anyone else know what this is?

There was Peter Potamus back in the 60's/70's. He was part of the Hanna-Barbera group of cartoons. He traveled through time on his hot air balloon with his monkey friend So-So.

I know of a cartoon hippo, but he didn't wear clothing. Hugo the Hippo was a movie released in 1975ish.
My other thought was Babar, who of course is an elephant, not a hippo, but was known to wear clothing.

Yeah I agree,definately the moomins.They may look like hippos,but according to Wiki they are 'Scandinavian trolls '
The series used to bore me senseless when I was younger,but couldn't be any worse than Blue Peter! lol

he may be thinking of "the moomins" they lived in a windmill papa moomin used to wear a bowler hat
