What's up with that? Why do people feel the need to imitate TV characters in their every-day life, instead of just being themselves?

Ah, the insidious nature of pop culture. Have they not noticed that there was no laugh track?

Part of the problem is attributable to people developing a sense of self outside of nurturing, stable relationships. They need role models in order to figure out how to handle situations. If they lack those role models, they might just act like TV characters that they admire in some way.
In short, there is no 'themselves' that they can act like because they are developing who they are.

Best advice, give them time, and they will mature. Unless they are in their late 20's and beyond. In that case, it is time for some new friends.

Hope this helps,
Good luck!

From "Throw Momma From the Train" :

"Television rots your brain"

As a recovering couch potato, I believe television has led to this phenomena of ADHD and ADD, I believe that it is an obesity element, and I believe it makes people not need other people.

To answer your question I think that most people try to act like they are in a sitcom because many times the characters say the things they wish they said or embody a feeling they wish they could have.
I still think it can be harmful to real feelings and emotions because I still tear up at the sappy sections of a movie like a Pavlovian dog.

Its the reverse actually. The sitcoms are acting our parts. Lifes a stage, as the saying goes.

Maybe its art immitating life?

Yea, I have had severe moments of that. Whats worse is when they begin acting like stand up comics. A friend of mine likes to act like he's 'Yuko the clown'- Which if you havent heard of him.. well imagine a drunk, mean clown. Oddly enough, not as funny when reinacted.

Quick and easy fix for this- you notice them doing it, immedietly swat them upside the head with a shoe. They stop almost instantly.
