I'm an average 16 yr old female, and was today informed that my iron level is just a little low at 19.

Also I am curious as to 19, what? mg or what? because looking at other questions simmilar to this I have become completely confused.

Any help would be appreciated.

Iron levels are tested four different ways. It sounds like you were tested for what is call ferritin level. The norm for this is 20-120 nanograms per deciliter of blood. So you are just slightly below the norm. Many women suffer from a mild form of anemia- usually related to menstruation. Eating a diet rich in protien and green leafy vegetables should do the trick. Vitamin C also helps the body absorb iron, so don't forget the citrus fruit. If you were really low and your doctor were worried he could put you on some type of supplement. However- too much iron can be dangerous too, so don't start self medicating.

I am thinking they did the ferritin test.. normal levels at your age range from 20-120ng/mL... so you aren't that far off. And it also depends on when the tests were taken. Most blood work is best done first thing in the morning. You will just have to take some iron supplements for a little while to get your body up to par is all. Hope this helps you some. I found the listed website to be fairly informative just in case you are curious.
