Actually thats a bit of an urban legend. The fact is we use our all our brain but not at the same time. The reason is that the amount of energy needed to reset the neurons after firing would be too much for the brain to handle (probably overheating it?).

According to the NY University Center for Neural Science the optimum "running speed" is to have only 3% of neurons firing at any one time.

Often wondered that myself. Same goes for the appendix ... I mean, we don't need it do we, yet due to simple evolution its fair to say that we have these things because we used them at some point.

Either that or we have a massive brain, appendix etc. because there is a parallel universe or space in time where we use them. Who knows ... Maybe we are all descendants of a future race, regressed to current levels, the technology not yet available to us as we have yet to learn. Maybe we were all on the brink of destruction, only to be brought back in time .... Ooooh the mind (bit I use) runs wild.

Aww ... Death Bunny ... how very boring. Doesnt explain the Appendix though does it.

If we only use 2/3rds what happens to the other 1/2.

the commonly accepted (and WRONG) amount is 10%
in fact we use all of our brain capacity, at various times. Obviously we do not use 100% all the time... that would lead to epilepsy, seizures, etc, etc.
we need to have spare capacity in the same way that a computer will need to have some unused memory, or it will not function correctly.

We use far less than 2/3 of our brain capacity - additionally right-handed people only use one side of their brains, whereas left-handed people (of who I am one) use both sides so it would be interesting to know what percentage each uses.

we only use 20-30% of our brain power, just imagine if we taped into the other 70-80%
