that stems from an old saying. In the middle ages, they had in europe, the black plague. It was caused by fleas. But the fleas were carried by the rats, which over ran most of the towns. It got so bad that people were dead and piled up in the streets. Every day, a wagon would go by and shout for the people to bring out their dead. These bodies would be collected and carted off. Now in most of the towns, rat catchers became. They would catch and kill as many rats as they possibly could manage. And there was a bounty or stipend paid per rat. Thus a rat's *** was worth something then. It wasn't a fortune. It was a very low amount, considering the amount of rats that were running all over the towns. So, a rat's *ss is not worth anything much.

The origin of the phrase "I don't give a rats..." dates back to Roman times, when the glutamus maximus of a large male rodent was considered a delicacy in upper class society. Peasants made quite a substantial living out of catching rats, particularly those with Jennifer Lopez-like proportions. However, this period abruptly ended after a severe outbreak of plague, when the @ss literally fell out of the rat market overnight. Thus the value of this once precious commodity was reduced to nothing, leading to the coining of the sarcastic phrase that still survives today.
