I should imagine they went to America for the same reasons as most immigrants such as:
1: Escape repression of faith at home.
2: In search of a better life with more opportunities.
3: A better life for children.
4: Escape the English.

Several reasons. Bad economic conditions were certainly a factor in some cases (Potatoe famine caused my ancestors to move to UK).
However, answer D is also a big factor (I also have rellies in Australia and Canada).
