Like most Unions in this country, they have outlived their original purpose. They have turned into yet another political machine. As far as the pay of teachers, one can only ask that their pay must stay withing the budget of the area in which they work. Don't forget that they are paid 100% out of taxpayers pockets. Negotiated pay increases and benefits do not stay withing most budgets of states that they are in. The Unions ignore this simple part and figure we will just pay it because of the education of our youth. I believe there should be merit pay based on the graduation rate in the districts. Less than 95% graduation rate should warrant a cut in pay for all board members and teachers in a district. maybe this would put the incentive to make more based on educating our youth.

Unions are necessary to insure a competitive salary. Do you want a teacher earning minimum wage? You won't get quality education this way.
free us... from what? homework?
......this union our children...This makes no sense....sentence fragment.
.....get some balls.... What do you want... more gym classes?
I know what they make...not enough to put up with a class of 32 like you.
Sweet ride? Not really with continual excuses from administrators, expanding class sizes, shortage of materials, weekly deadlines, outdated books, hearing impaired politicians who cut funding and increase standards.
Little effort IS a problem...I admit. The lack of effort is what had been given by many parents before dumping their brats off for pre-school unprepared, so they can learn how to act civilized without punching, spitting, pulling hair, urinating in their pants, stealing, lying and eating snot.
Those social habits should be learned at home before entering the classroom. The teacher soon learns that many of the students are "behind," before they even start.
No I don't think teachers are overpaid. Their salaries should be doubled.

Given other questions you ask it's apparent you have anger issues with others and the government. I would hope you can find help in dealing with your anger. We have the best teachers in the world and for the most part we have a great education system. Many states work hard to make it possible for all students to not be left behind. We even send aid to other countries including volunteer teachers to help educate children in other lands. It's apparent you did poor in school and were probably the class clown. I would guess that is why your so bitter about education. Our teachers have a hard time and don't get paid nearly enough and I pray if you have kids that they are like their momma.

Always blaming the system. Individual behavior is a better predictor of success than union balls. You're not forced into public schools - just forced to be schooled to a certain age. Having said that, though, schools have a difficult time developing a culture that raises the bar for the underachievers.

Teachers are WAAAAY overpaid and underworked!! My opinion is that teacher salaries need to be capped at no more than $40,000 per year. Period!

I THOUGHT THE UNION WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE APART OF THE GOVERNMENT. So get rid of the union and we would have alot of the problems solved.
