It depends how much money you want to spend on it really. The basics to suggest would be updating the RAM and possibly the hard drive (if the drive is full or close to full this can impact on the speed).

If these still don't improve anything to a level you're happy with then you're talking about upgrading the processor as well; this is where it might get pricey. You will have to check what your current motherboard supports and if you are already at the best it can offer you will need to upgrade that too.

Howdi partner, everything they've all said is definetly a good start. Also remove all but essential desktop icons, coz even if you don't use them, they go through a pre-load at start up to help quicken the process if clicked on.
Here's some freeware programs you can use to help things out:
CrapCleaner: www.ccleaner.com

IOBit: www.iobit.com - go to downloads link and there 2 freebies, dont be encouraged to upgrade (1)Smart Defrag & (2) Advanced Windows Care (Personal)

These programs clean your reg, delete temp files, help bottle necks and loads more, plus with ccleaner you can save the cookies you actually want/need and it'll delete those left behind. But don't over clean your reg that can be counter productive. Aslo create an initial restore point be for doing any changes, and i'd recommend saving your reg files seperately as well = start-run-regedit and enter-file-export-Save name as the date and possibly a little sentence to remind ya of what you were doing before or after the save.
For internet ccleaner & AWC do quite good at sorting, but once in a while you can type "netsh dump" in the run command = start-run-netsh dump-enter, don't listen to anyone who says "oh yeah you can also do Prefetch in run then delete the files coz there all temps", this is true as long as you know what your deleting, coz deleting all will slow alot of things down, imagine it as like cookies but for your installed programs, it stores temp data to help speed most used programs up.
Hope this has helped, and not totally blagged ya :) or message me to clarify anything,

sounds like you might have some spy/malware dropping loadsa data on your hard drive.

Check the available disk space on your hard drive/s (window explorer and right click on C: drive, then properties).

Look for files that you don't recognise, won't hurt to get spyware software and anti-virus refreshed.

Also you can search for and delete all files ending *.tmp and you can also defrag your c: (right click on c: and go to tools). The defrag will take a while but helps your computer work more efficiently.

Those are probably the most important two things to do. You can also add RAM to ease the data flow and/or upgrade the chip. The first one (spyware/virus) is the most likely reason why you are processing through treacle right now.

Good luck- if you want any of this explained more thoroughly drop me a line ;)

Your PC cannot be getting progressively slower otherwise it would not work at all. It must reach a level where it runs at a consistent speed which you have diagnosed as slow.

Use Windows Task Manage to see what processes are using up your resources and take remedial action.

first of all, do u have lots of stuff installed? eg games other software n mostly stuff installed from the net. this tends to slow the process up especially when waiting 4 ur system to open up.
1. go to add/remove in ur control panel n remove stuff u least use n those that are least need n take up lot of space. delete also the unused shorcuts on ur desktop.
2. after clearing all unwated stuff do a defragment on ur drives. hope fully this would do a little difference. try it! may work. n do scans on viruses etc those lates softwares that ucan get 4 this. hope this helps
