When the Taleban were in power, heroin production fell. It's now at record levels despite the supposed allied mission to eradicate it. In order to convince the growers to cease cultivation a credible alternative must be presented. There isn't one. It is naive to assume that the crop can simply be eradicated in a country the size of Afghanistan especially given the limited no.of personnel available to perform the task & the money generated by the huge demand for heroin.

At the end of the Vietnam war - the USA government were afraid to bring it's soldiers home - because most of them were heroin addicts. Heroin made them hero's! It helped them cope with killing whole villages of men, women and children. I suspect the soldiers still use heroin. The days of fags and booze are long over. A lot of top military are bound to be involved in the drug trade in Afghanistan - the same as in Vietnam.

Well its like this. First off drugs are an important part of how people do business and yes even legal business. Also, these fields are heavily gaurded. Long story short it doesnt stand to have enough positive results to go and destroy the worldwide supply of opium.

I did hear that the gov was interested in the heroin for medical reasons. Also if you suddenly stop the drug trade all hell would break loose.
