It never hurts to take folic, its great for you, however find out what dosage is appropriate for you by talking to your doctor, and not only that but just like all other good things its in some of the foods you eat everyday, so you may have been ingesting folic acid all along without your knowledge of it if you've not been paying attention to your labels on foods.

Yes by all means!

Ideally you would be consuming plenty of folic acid prior to and during pregnancy due to it being an additive in breads and the like, but a supplement is a good idea too.

start taking a prenatal vitamin with folic acid in it, it's very good for the baby's development. Your doctor should be able to perscride or recomend one. It's also best to continue to take your prenatal vitamins while you are breast feeding. Remember, if you're not getting proper vitimins and minerals for the baby, your body with start taking it from your bones, mucles, anywhere it can find it which can be VERY hard on the mother.
