My step by step guide on formatting your computer (Please note this wipes everything off of your drive, so back up first, and you will need an XP CD and a valid license key):
1) First make sure you back up all of your important files :o)
3) Next, put the windows XP cd into the drive. Restart your computer. If the boot sequence in your bios is set correctly you will be asked to press a key to boot from the XP disc...
(If it is not set, then hold down or dependent on your motherboard to get into the BIOS (or 'setup') and change the boot sequence so that CDROM is the primary/first boot device)
3) Once you have done all this, XP will start setting itself up and take you to the place where you can choose to delete your partition (i.e. format your drive - NTFS), if you go through the sequence and do that, then you can choose to press to set up XP on your drive. Make sure you have your license key to hand, as you will need to type that in. Apart from that it is pretty straight forward and XP will guide you through the setup.
You may want to consider System restore before you do this though.

Hi, you don't want to format your computer you want to put it back to how you had it originally - ELSE YOU WILL LOSE YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM!!!!!!!
You need to go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore and restore your computer back to the earliest date (which will be when you first used your computer). This will put it back to its factory settings and will keep XP on your pc!!!
For reference, to reformat completely - YOU WILL LOSE YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM THIS WAY - go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt and at the prompt type "format" without the exclamation marks. Answer yes to all questions it asks from then on.
Use the first System Restore method to ensure you still have XP.

if you have the windows xp disc then just pop in the cd and restart the computer and it should boot from the cd...just follow the on-screen instructions and then finish the installation of windows....
other way is if you have a bootable disc...just restart the computer with the disc inserted then perform a reformat on drive C: where windows is normally installed...
hope this helps

Unless you have the manufactiure restore CD, its not that simple.
The second method is to pop in the Windows CD, boot from that, install Windows (overwrite old version during the process) then reinstall all the drivers such as sound, video etc.
