Since its gonna be a 5 minute movie, I guess this would be enough.
- Japan attacked Pearl Habour on Dec 7,1941 in the early morning (7.58a.m) on a Sunday knowing that all US battleships and fleet would dock at Pearl Harbour on a Sunday.
- 350 planes were used to attack the harbour, one of the largest in history, most of it being "Zero's" jet fighter as they were the best of that time.
- The attack lasted for about an hour witnessing the greatest damage ever done to US fleet as they watched their pride fully built "Arizona" battleship sunk.
- Two Americans were blamed for the unprecedented attack; Admiral Husband E. Kimmel & Lt. General Walter Short. They were blamed 4 few things like not preparing torpedo nets to protect the ships in the water and not taking defence measures earlier although have been alerted of possible attacks.

So far I hope you are not taking notes - - - - yikes // //
The Japanese Empire was determined to expand throughout China and Southeast Asia and had in fact been fighting in China since the early 1930's. Purely as a tactical exercise The Japanese Armed Srvices, primarilly their army & navy had to have a plan for dealing with The United States of America in case America decided to challenge Japan's Pacific Supremacy.
The Japanese had a perfectly fine plan for dealing with America. Plan Rainbow called for Japanese forces to carry on with their campaign in Southeast Asia, especially in attacking Java and Indonesia he Filipines, and IF AMERICA chose to fight, then the Japanese planned to hurl their much larger fleet against an American fleet in the deep waters of the Southeast Pacific.
Here is the mystery - - - Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, an alumnus of Harvard University (think Skulls & Bones Club), this man started arguing for a 'first strike; policiy. Yamamoto actually conned intelligent high ranking officials into sanctioning an attack on Pearl Harbor on O'ahu one of the seven major/primary Hawai'i'an Islands/. A sneak attack on a Sunday Morning when most good Americans should either be in Church or watching a football game.
It was an audacious & spectacular attack. Japanese Nakajima B5N (Japanese: 中島 B5N,) AKA Kate Torpedo Planes launched torpedos while Aichi D3A- AKA Val Dive bombers dropped bombs on ships in Pearl Harbor. while Vals and Zero Fighter Craft (NOT JETS) bombed and strafed aircraft on Ford Island and inland at Wheeler Air Base and Schoefield. It was a big noisy attack. Lots of big explosions and yes some true tragedies such as the USS Arizona exploding killing thousands aboard and The USS Oklahoma hammered by torpedos and capsizing.
Spectacular - - - a spctacular failure. An America that may have been indifferent to a Japanese attack against Java and Indonesia even US installations in The Filipines, an America suddenly indignant at an attack on 'American Soil,' even if a majority of Americas had no clue where Pearl Harbor was, but they did know the name Waikiki and that was enough to set blod boiling. An America angry at having their Sunday football routine rudely interrupted errupted with calls to kill the J - - - - a word which cannot be printed in 2010.
The attack resulted in the loss of a couple of mostly obsolete battleships. One of the most spectacular blasts captured on film was the aft ammunittion locker on the Destroyer Shaw blowing up. The Shaw was back in action within a year. You see, when you sink ships in a shallow harbor equipped with the best repair facilities in the US of A the results are negligble.
Pearl Harbor proved that aircraft could be used effectively to neutralize a fighting force. Though it was not used properly, radar proved it could be an effective tool - - - and a lot of lessons were learned as a result of what can best be described as one heck of a live fire exercise/ American reaped those benefits, The Japanese lost, big time.
Key Players - - - - Admiral Husband E Kimmel who was unfairly chastised for not doing more and General Short who simply came up short. Though rather tedious would recomend the movie TORA TORA TORA.
Peace....

The Japanese had imperial ambitions. American intervetion was a distinct possibility at the time. A great deal of sabre rattling occured and it was viewed as when, rather than if, the two countries went to war.
The Japanese intended to destroy, not only the US fleet, but its fuel reserves (These were more important than the ships, since their distruction would effectivly knock the US out of the Pacific). The attact would be launched from 3 carriers, to the North of the Island. This would be launched in waves, each with it's own objective. Fortunately, the raid aimed at the fuel reserves was called off.
Most of the ships crippled in the attack were repaired and entered service against the Japs.
You could do worse than rent Tora Tora Tora.

You're making a movie and you think you'll get definitive info here? Try reading a book, looking up a website devoted to Pearl Harbor. In other words, do your own homework!

Pearl Harbor is in Hawaii, and the US Naval ships were sitting there when the Japanese in planes began bombing them as they sat there. Everyone was so totally unprepared and most of the ships were sunk right there, in fact I believe most of them are still there. The Japanese made several passes over them as they bombed.

The main thing you have to see is that how was it that the Americans failed to see the bombing of their Naval base. They had the intelligence about the attack .
