Trees attract lightning.
Lightning can use you as a path to the earth just as easily as it can use any other object. Appropriate shelter would be a building or a car. If you do not have anywhere to go, then you should avoid taking shelter under trees.
Never lay down on the ground. After lightning strikes the ground, there is an electric potential that radiates outward from the point of contact. If your body is in this area, current can flow through you. You never want the current to have the ability to pass through your body. This could cause cardiac arrest, not to mention other organ damage and burns.

if you hide under a tree during a thunderstorm you risk the tree being hit by lightning and falling on you. you are better off under a tree than in the middle of an open field since there are more targets for the lightning.

Because if the tree is the highest point the lightening will head for there, as it will be the shortest way to earth. This could cause the tree to explode, catch on fire and the electricity will be discharged at the ground - where you are!
If you were in a forest, it wouldn't make much difference, as there would be many different targets. If out in the open you should make yourself as small as possible for the same reason.
Stay on your feet, squat down, with your arms wrapped around your knees. This reduces the risk of a direct strike, and reduces the risk of electrocution from a nearby strike traveling though the earth.

The lightening is the positive discharge of electricity. It will find its shortest root to reach earth. If the buildings are wet it will hit the top of the buildings. If you have lightening arrestor on top of your building the electric charge will reach the ground via lightening arrestor which are normally grounded by copper wire. Since the wet tree takes the negative charged particles from the earth to the high altitude the chances are more for the trees to be attacked by lightening. Even in the open ground this will affect first the tallest person. That is why if you don't find proper shelter during lightening you have to roll like a ball to reduce your height. Standing and lying in floor also dangerous. ..

When the lightning hits the tree, the water (sap) inside the tree is boiled instantly and explodes outwards taking the bark with it. If you're standing next to it, it would be like being shot by a shotgun - hundreds of fragments of bark would rip through you, probably causing serious injuries or death.

Lightning is drawn to high points. Trees are high points and often draw lightning to them. If you stand under one when it is hit by lightning you will probably get it too.
