As other answers have said, WWI was known until 1939 as 'The Great War'. The answer that suggests WW2 was known as 'the war to end wars' is incorrect. That phrase was another given to WWI. At the time, what was happening was so horrific that people thought that another war could never be fought, hence the name. WW2 was just known as 'the war' whilst it was on. people didn't bother to give it a name, other than 'the Hitler war'

WW ! was called The Great War.
WW 2 was called World War 2

like everyone said, WWI was The Great War. But it was also The War to End All Wars.
WWII was only ever WWII, at least once it had a name. Just as we now call "Operation Iraqi Freedom" the war, they called WWII the war. Until it was over, then WWII was used.
