My daughter has been accepted at a very good school and on the science block roof are 5 phone masts....3g, vodaphone, tmobile, orange and one other. My daughter is really excited about starting in September but I have this niggling worry about the stories that the masts could cause cancer, Apparantly only one parent a yerar complains about them and the school has around 1500 children. Some people have said I am worrying about nothing and that if they were dangerous they would not be on a school roof but others would not send their child there purely because of this. Anyone got facts or information on this please?

I would not worry about any ill health effects from a cell tower. These are very low power. If there were health issues from being near cell towers it would be known already and they would never be allowed on a school. I do understand your concern for your child though. However in this case, I wouldn't worry about it. They won't cause cancer and being on a roof, she'll never get near it.

If your daughter was sitting atop one of these i would be conserned but as long as she is any more than 1 meter away the risk is virtually neglible. Theoreticly speaking, the person with the cell phone against there head are at more risk and standing within 10cm of a microwave can emit more microwaves than the masts. Even if your daughter was recieving radiowaves at a large amount, there is no solid evidence supporting the fact that microwaves cause cancer.
Believe me she will be fine and it isnt worth affecting her education due to the masts.

Although theoretically safe (by measuring heat generated in the body due to the microwaves), I would be concerned and would follow the latest research in this area. Placing them in a school is not very responsible (the school will earn quite a lot for doing this). Children are more vulnerable than adults as they are still growing. Also saying that the radiation at playground level is less than that generated by a phone by the ear is true, but your daughter does not have a phone by her ear 8 hours a day.

The jury is still out on exposure to radio waves. The masts are designed to send the signals out to the horizon and beyond. There's probably very little effect below them. Remember that every expert who suggests a new long term study on the possible effects of mobile phones is making a job for himself.

Contrary to popular beleifs, they wont cause cancer as easily as you may think. Your daughter will probably get cancer if she sat on the roof next to the antenna & made cellphone calls all day lond, every day for about a year.
The most that could happen is that she could suffer from mild headaches at most. A proper diet will help her cope with any of these problems.
On a final note I would like to add that I dont beleive that what is happenning is a good thing at all. With more of these antennas being installed & the interference of other radio frequencies in the air, perhaps one day it will become dangerous.

i understand wkere you are coming from, but i doubt very much that the school would risk the health of there pupils plus knowing that parents may fear the masts health on there children that they would not have them ther in the first place.
i live in a block pf flats and ther are 3 on the roof, the council had to ask all the residents to vote on weather we wanted them or not, and it looks like more people said they didnt mind as they were fitted, we have had no problems this far but i am not saying we will not have any either.

Phone masts are very dangerous, one nearly fell on me the other day while they were installing it.

if you live in a place with any cell coverage you are already exposed to the waves. it doesn't make a difference. she'd have to sit on it for years to actually make anything possibly maybe happen. even then it would be a slim chance and they'd have to up the power alot to do anything then.

Visit the school and check for small birds and bees in the vicinity.
If there aren't any about then the "smog" is thick enough to cause concern.
Buy silver lined clothing if you want her to avoid irradiation.
