despite its name, the book " Music Theory for Dummies" is a concise factual guide into the fascinating world of music. It will be of some help to you. Of course, any standard work on music theory, while drier in tone and content, will do the same, if you are that interested....
As one answerer suggested, beginner's piano books are good ( there are excellent ones for adult beginners as wellif you have access to a piano, that is.

I don't know about you, so sorry if I sound rude, but some people, when they say they "play by ear" they just mean that they can't read music, they don't really play by ear at all. Most people who can and do play by ear can also play from music - that's how they developed the ability to play by ear. It's not really a question of one OR the other , most people do both. If you really can play something by ear, just from listening to it, and can play the proper arrangement, not just pick out the melody and maybe add a few block chords, then why are you bothering with piano lessons? A good teacher is never simply going to show you where to put your finger to play, by copying, a piece of music, they will teach you how to play the instrument, not individual tunes. I assume now though, that you won't need him to do this? Frankly, I don't know why anyone would be so determined not to read music, especially when they have a teacher, who I presume they are paying, advises them to do so.

Get a piano teacher- that's how I learned. It's actually quite simple once you know the system. Each line equals a note that has a name (a,b,c,d,e,f,g) some are sharped and some flat but you don't learn that until later. Teacher is my best advice
