Well, the two week free trials on both of them are pure viewing bliss.
In my two week trial at Netflix, I got 19 movies in that two weeks (I was on the five at a time plan). They didn't treat my mother so well and she only got 9 movies in those two weeks (she was also on the five at a time plan.)
After the "honeymoon" was over, Netflix started throttling me, sent me the last few movies on my queue, even though the 49 on top of them all read "available." And they started sending them out to me slower and slower. It was the last month I was on their 6 out at a time plan (I was so pleased with the free trial, I paid for 6 out at a time). I bumped down to two at a time (because their selection is good) and will keep one of the movies they send me out for two weeks, while I keep returning the other one. I get roughly 15 movies a month from them that way. (Dishonest? Maybe a little. But they started it.)
Blockbuster is also good during the two week free trial, but after the honeymoon is over, expect service to become lax. I recommend not returning the movies to the store. If you do that, they will stagger them just the same as Netflix. Send Blockbuster movies back through the mail and they will clear in two business days.
Blockbuster does not have very good quality control and will often ship damaged movies. If you report this and then send the movie back immediately, they will send you back the same damaged copy. They do not check it. (I tested this out once. I reported a damaged disc and then sent it back the next day. A couple of days later, I got back the same damaged disc. I considered it might be possible that another copy of the movie got damaged in the mail, so I wrote in a marker on the DVD sleeve, "This disc is CRACKED. IT WILL NOT PLAY." And then sent it back. Sure enough, when I got it a few days later, there I am, staring at my own handwriting. I raised holy heck with customer service and got a coupon for a free movie. This sort of thing hasn't happened to me again.)
Another problem with Blockbuster is that they do not have as good a selection as Netflix and will only ship a disc to you if it's in a mailing center within two mailing days from you. So if you have a movie in your queue that has been at the top for a couple of months and continues to say "available" chances are, it's at a mailing center 3 or more days away from you.

i tried them both.
determined that Netflix's delivery is much faster (though as someone above stated, they do slow down once you use them for awhile) and that they have more of the movies that i want. they also have actually gotten movies that they did not originally have after i told them i wanted them.
so i prefer Netflix.
two new wrinkles--if you also have access to a Blockbuster brick and mortar store, their online service can be more economical. you can actually get movies from online and locally on that same membership.
also i have seen some movies listed as "Blockbuster only" movies, meaning that Netflix won't get them.
so for some, Blockbuster may be the better choice.

we have had Netflix for over 2 years and we haven't noticed any type of a slow down... sometimes movies might take a bit longer to get here but I think that probably has more to do with the Postal service and how far you are from the nearest distribution centre... Also sometimes movies won't be available from your nearest distribution centre so they have to mail them from another one....
but for the most part it takes about 3 days to get a new movie...
Example: we mail out a movie on Monday, Netflix gets it Tuesday and we have a new movie in our mail box on Wednesday....

They use the "bait and switch" with you on the trials...Everything comes VERY VERY fast....then after the trial period...it slows waaaaaay down. But in all honesty it's still a good deal.

I agree with rasta, They do slow down after the trial. Speed depends on how close a distribution center is to you.
