Because a bunch of racist white guys all shot him...(its been awhile, but i got the impression that he was taken out back by the kkk or similar and done in.)

I think that was put in to show the cruelty of the whole situation. The action of the white guards could be understood on one level; Tom was a prisoner, accused of rape and he was trying to escape. He was really strong, so they might have had to resort to bullets to stop him.
BUT the fact that he was shot 17 times (It take much less to kill a man!) just shows how much the guards despised him. And we, the readers know that he was innocent... which makes us feel even more sympathetic towards the situation of the blacks.

Because the shooters were looking for ANY reason at all to shoot him. After all, he was just convicted of raping a white girl.

Because he was black, and he "raped" a white woman. The guards saw an opportunity to kill him, and they took it.

Because he was very strong and the guards were very brutal.
