It was originally "straitjacket", and that is still the preferred spelling. It's called that because it prevents any movements of the arms, as they are straitlaced into the jacket.

i think they call it that because it is used to make you straight
and correct.
Since your crazy your all over the place.
but the jacket will make you "straight" agian.
