hi, as a senior, i have been accepted to both davis and berkeley, and can probably go to both only if i live at home or with relatives since i am not getting any financial aid at all BUT a lot of people tell me I would do better without the competition and should go to crc and sac state for 2 years to save money and then transfer. others say that i've worked too hard not to go to a UC. is it better that i've already been accepted and this will benefit me when i apply again as a transfer? will colleges look at high school grades? or should i directly go to a UC? help me convince my parents!

hey kid. take it from me as a second generation person from parents that came from a country of old values and slow pace culture. GO TO A UC!! The whole idea of going to college is to get that higher education and finish as soon as possible. My parents did'nt even know or help me to become successful to finish college. All they worried about was the money. Money should be an irrelevent reason since it looks like you have the talent and resources to go to college. GO TO A UC ASAP!! You will be finished faster than going to a CC then transfer. At least you will have an inside advantage if you are in the UC system and have a clear look at your cirriculum. Your basically blind if you inquire about Berkeley or Davis when its time. then time could easily be wasted when you miss a detail trying to apply or make sure that your classes are good enough for transfer.
GO TO A UC ASAP!! I have seen the difference myself!

If you think you can afford the fees, go to Berkeley. While Berkeley is very competitive, the campus offers a great deal of academic help to students, you just have to ask for it. The reputation will do you good when you are on the job market.

If you want to save money, attend a community college. Attending another 4-year college will actually decrease your chance of transferring to an UC. Your current acceptance does little for you when you apply for transfer because the evaluation processes are very different.

I say go to Cal-my God, you got into one of the best schools in the whole world. You can't do any better than that. you will not be able to transfer into UC Berkeley if you go to another state school at the university level. (I am assuming that sac state is part of the cal state system, I don't think that you will get into Berkeley from there) Check Cal's transfer data and see where the students come from, I bet it is junior colleges, for the most part

Please! Unless you are living on the verge of a nervous breakdown, ignore those who tell you to avoid competition! College isn't a social club; it is a chance to push yourself to achieve more than you realized you could do and find new limits for yourself. One of my biggest gripes about many students is their failure to realize that the fact that they are doing as well as the person next to them doesn't mean much in the overall scheme of life. When they go to look for jobs, they will be competing against the best people from the best schools. It is harmful to be complacent.

If you go to another school now and transfer as a junior, you will be judged by your performance in college, not what you did in high school. I understand the financial crunch, but if you can swing it at all, given that you have been admitted to two terrific schools, I would definitely try for one of those, even if it means living with relatives.

My question, though, is if your parents can't afford to send you to a public school, why didn't you get any financial aid? Even loans? Work study? It seems to me that something is strange here.

Since you have already been accepted to both Davis and Berkeley you should choose one and go straight to it. Even though community college is cheaper, you will come across obstacles when trying to transfer to a universtiy. You have already been accepted to UC's based on your high school edcuation. If money is a problem, take out a loan, get a grant, schlorship ect.......it will be much easier and enjoyable instead of going to a community college. From my own experience

UC Berkeley is the #1 ranked public school in the country. Go into debt if you have to, but go there. You'll make it up once you have your degree in higher wages.
