Remember that fish also benefit from ruffage in their diets. Frozen, dethawed, deshelled peas are a treat that ensure that the digestive tract doesn't become full of air.
Mix this with frozen daphnia, bloodworms, and brineshrimp. NEVER feed your fish bait, as it is unregulated and more proned to parasites. Remember that live food is also likely to have parasites so stick to freeze dried and frozen foods.
Betta pellets are a fine base food but they need these kinds of supplements to maintain the necessarily high levels of proteins that keep your betta healthy. The "cream of the crop" in this catagory would be Hikari Betta Bi-Gold which is rich in protein and NOT crude fat (which is not so healthy for your betta)
You can always look at the nutrition facts on the side of your food and judge for yourself. Remember that crude fat should be (in good foods) below 5%. In cheap foods, fat approaches 10%. Protein should be numero uno on that list at 48% and higher. If you're planning on supplementing with live and frozen foods, look for a food that has protein levels around 55%.
Happy fishkeeping!

Hikari brand Betta Bio Gold- it's a pellet food and it's what I feed my betta at home and what we always tell our customers to feed thier betta's, at the aquarium store I work at. It's by far the best food for a more healthy betta, and even better, it cost about the same as even some of the lower quality betta foods. It wont cloud or dirty your water as much as other kinds can. And it's packaging is kinda cool also.

I have Hikari gold betta pllets, freeze dried blood worms, tropical fish flakes(tetra and betta style) and frozen brine shrimp. My bettas love this stuff, a few don't like flakes though. All of them are nice healthy and colorful :)

I've been using Omega One betta pellets lately. My guys don't seem to object.
It's best to offer a variety though - mine also get occasional bloodworms, brine shrimp, and peas.
