its 11:30 now and i am stuck on 4 questions in science. please help me so i could finally go to bed. Thanks!

1) Can a contour line on a topographic map connect a point with an elevation of 100 feet to a point with an elevtion of 110 feet? explain why or why not.

2) On a topographic map, how would you show an island in the ocean with an elevation of 80 feet if the contour interval is 10 feet?

3) How could a person lost at sea use the Global Positioning System to find where he or she is?

4) Why do you think gentle slopes are shown with more widely spaced lines than steep slopes are?

Thank you all sooo much!

1) No
2) 8 circles (one inside the other) (I think that's what it's asking)
3) Latitude and Longitude (?)
4) because the slope is less steep and it covers more ground before reaching the marked elevation.

1. No, a contour line must connect locations with the same elevation.
2. The island will be drawn with a "circle" in the center to indicate the part with the 80 foot elevation. Then surrounding contour lines will be drawn for 70', 60', 50', 40', 30', 20', 10'.
3. The GPS will tell the person's latitude and longitude. These readings can be compared with a map or with the person's previous knowledge to find the location.
4. Steep slopes have more closely spaced lines because the elevation drops off more quickly; less distance between the elevations marked on the map.

1) No. Lines join points of the SAME elevation.

2) 7 or 8 concentric circles.

3) The GPS would give the person's current latitude and longitude. Comparing that with a map, the person could then set a heading, using the sun if lacking navigational equipment.

4) Gentle slopes have greater horizontal distance between specified elevation increases than steeper slopes.

1) Yes. Lines would merge to form a singular line very rarely; only at the point of a vertical cliff.
2) Shape of the island made with eight contour lines.
3)By activating the GPS, the person would obtain the longitude and latitude of his position which could be used to chart the way back to land.
4) Widely. If the lines represent a 10 feet elevation, the closer together the faster the rise in elevation.

A contour line is an imaginary line on the surface of the Earth connecting points of equal elevation.

umm, well go to the site, it's about topography, and read your book.
