every single game is different. the main storyline usually is something along the lines of "hero saves world"
if you want to go for the worst FF, the one that killed the way that RPGs were made, play VII (seven)
if you want to play an FF game that was actually good, play IV (four) or IX (nine)
it doesn't matter which game you play though, playing VI (six) won't help you play I (one), nor will playing II (two) help you play V (five) or VIII (eight)

The Final Fantasy games have independent plots, except for FF X-2 which is the only true sequel in the series. Other than that, each of the games is completely different (characters, locations, etc.) About the only thing they all share is similar concepts (gameplay elements, items, magic, etc.). The FF series has always had good graphics and sound/music (appropriate to time it came out). You usually get your money's worth, in terms of play time (50-70 hours on average to complete the games). The biggest gripe with FF is the lack of originality sometimes, as well as unpolished elements. It kind of depends on which one you play. The only one that you pay to play is FFXI, which runs about $12.95 a month plus the $20-30 intially for the game itself. I'm told it's inferior to other MMORPGs such as WOW.

yep! basically the plot for each series is different, except FF X and FF X-2, it is continuing.
i played from X which in my opinion is the best. FF X is a story of a world named Spira. Every 1000 years a monster called Sin appear to destroy this world and destroyed by a priest called "Summoner" only to reappear again in the next 1000 year. Yuna is the heroine in this serie, she is a Summoner. She doubted her faith of Yevon, such religi in Spira..., that thought summoners to summon the Final Aeon (Aeon--> magical creatures, such as Ifrit, Shiva, etc) due to defeat Sin. So she tried to find out another way to defeat Sin altogether with the help of her guardians. There is one named Tidus in one of her guardian who come from the past. FF X actually centering the story upon Tidus who try to figure out why he could be in the future while his homeland, Zanarkand actually has been destroyed by Sin.
FF X is a fantastic game! It has the plot, the characters, the beautiful designs, and a bitter-sweet ending!!!
If you already have PS2, i suggest you to try from FF X. VII and VIII is good too, but too many dialogues!!!!! FF X is more dynamic, with more actor voices and FMV.

First off: w00t! for Guild Wars
Every game in the Final Fantasy series is disticnt (excet for X-2 and Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced)
Everybody has a different opinnion about what final fantasy game is the best, so im just gonna give some of the highlights of the games/system:
(using the original japanese numbering in release order)
>FFI - the original game for the NES characters were fairly static (except for levels and plot developed issues), battles occur randomly
>FFIII - introduced the job system that was used for every game up untill FFVII with little change
>FFVII - the first game to use fully rendered 3d models and had story driving cinematic sequences; this game introduced the materia system for skills and abilities; added mini games to the series; changed the way most people looked at character development in game plot (due to the unexpected death of a main plot character)
>FF Tactics - reverted back to the job system and changed gameplay by making battles strategic movement of characters on an overlay board
>FFX - changed character development to a 'sphere grid', added a half-baked romance element, and added the full 3d mini-game 'blitzball'
>FFX-2 - the first sequel based on the romance aspect of FFX
>FF Chrystal Chronicals - the return of final fantasy to a nintendo system (the FF series was on nintendo systems for games 1-5, and jumped ship over to sony's systems for 6-?) had an ill conceptual multiplyer gameplay
>FF Tactics Advanced - a return to the tactics game system for the GBA set in the same lands but much later in the history of the gameworld.
>FFXI - the MMO based on the job system adapted from FF3
>FFVII: the Dirge of Cerberus - a shooter based a chacter in FFVII with a bugged third-person camera
>FFXII - returns to land of Ivalace (from FF Tactics, timespan may coincide with FFTA) and removes random battle sequences in favor of complex player preset battle actions in non-staged (occuring in walking areas) format that can be mostly avoided
>FFXIII - the planned Final Fantasy for the PS3 with spin off games set for release around the same time (there is some speculation that one of the spin offs will be for the Nintendo Wii which would make it the first FF game to span multiple consoles under a single title)

All of the games (exept for anything related to FFVII as well as FFX-2) have a unique plot. If you're thinking about getting FFXI, don't. It is the worst game in the main series. I recommend FFIV, FFVI, FFVII, or FFX

each final fantasy has different storyline. I played all from the 1st - FF12 except for FF11 which is online.
My favourites are FF4,6,7,8,9,10,12. But i think if u need to pick one, try FF7 for a start, then go for 9,10 and 12.
