The Heisman is a snakebite. Rashaan Salaam, Gino Toretta, Ron Dayne, Chris Weinke?

the same thing happen to jason white a few years ago. he won the heisman trophy and he wasnt even drafted until late or sign on as an free agent i cant remember exactly but some guys game just dont translate well into the NFL. And people say that troy smith is about the same height as drew brees and brees is doing great in the NFL but smith had the talent all around him and an offense build around the running game and his ability to escape pressure with his legs in college. Brees didnt have that much to work with at purdue and he put up great numbers there. Troy Smith can be a good NFL QB but just have to fall into the perfect system for him and plus after the second round there was nothing much going on as for QB's cause that is where teams fill needs and add depth at certain position and the QB class was that deep this year.

QBs that win the Heisman aren't always NFL stars.
Just look at recent history Gino Torretta, Charlie Ward, Danny Wuerffel, Eric Crouch, Chris Wienke, and Jason White are all QBs that have won the Heisman that were either busts or had no impact at all in the NFL.
Troy Smith is very small in terms of NFL QB size. He also has poor mechanics and cant read defenses well. He got away with alot his flaws on talent in college that he can't in the NFL.

It may be disappointing but Smith just doesn't translate to the NFL game in the eyes of the scouts. They had questions about his height (not really a problem to me, but it is something that can bring down a QB). He also had questions about how he would contribute as a QB. His accuracy or arm strength didn't test well and if that doesn't work, you need to be a fast, scrambling QB. Well, Smith didn't clock a very fast time by NFL standards. Probably the only reason he was drafted at all was for being on a winner.

(Heisman Winners in no way drafted) 2003 - Jason White 2003 - Charlie Ward 1958 - Peter Dawkins Tommie Frazier wasn't a Heisman Winner.... he became runner as much as Eddie George in 1995.

Because Heisman's mean absolutely nothing in the NFL.

They look and evaluate the player as a whole....what they can do, what they can't do.

If Heisman's meant anything then Jason White, Eric Crouch, Chris Weinke would be good or still playing....

It's what scouts see during the combine, senior day/bowl, on tape, etc... he's been evaluated from head to toe and no one wanted to pick him up till late...
Remember the kid from Oklahoma (Jason White) a couple of years ago? He was a Heisman Trophy winner... he never made it to NFL (he really wanted to play)... he's no where to be found!
Smith is lucky Baltimore gave him consideration. I believe he's got a chip on his shoulder now which will help him push harder and play well in the next level!

lets get one thing striaght, winning the Heisman Trophy does not guarantee that you go in the first three rounds. for example Charlie Ward won it when he played for FSU and where did he go in the draft you ask? NOWHERE but since he was so talented he went and made an NBA roster so if your whoe notion of Heisman trophy winner=high draft choice you are mistaken

You have to remember that the heisman means the best college football player. It doesnt always meen best draft pick. The college game and the pro game are totally different. The pro teams sometimes get to caught up in 40 times, arm strength, height, and so on.At least troy got drafted remember charlie ward.No one even looked at him.

terrible game v. gators probably cost him a coupla million $. plus, Heisman Trophy is great on a resume, but doesn't really matter when one has to start over in the NFL.
