at my job, i was arguing with some female co-workers that if you take the top male athlete in one sport and put him up against the top female athlete, the male athlete would be better. ie) kobe bryant(i'm not sure if he's the top male baskeball player) against the top female WNBA player one-on-one. the top male soccer team against the top female soccer team. i'm not saying that all guys are better than all women. i'm talking about the top athletes in their prime. i figure it's because guys have more testosterone and can build more muscle. Muscle strength can greatly help ones athletic abilities. i know this question may sound a bit sexist, but I am curious to see how people would respond to this question, esp women. dont think that I think men are better than women in everyway. I believe women are just as smart as men or could be smarter and are very capable of doing the same things that men do in the work place.

It depends upon what aspect of the sports you are talking about.
Would a top NBA player win a one-on-one contest against a top WNBA player? Yes, most likely. On the other hand, if a top NBA player went against Becky Hammon or Erin Thorn in a (no dunks) game of H-O-R-S-E, or a three-point shooting competition, I'd expect the WNBA player to win it.
I think that any athletic contest where size and/or brute strength is the #1 deciding factor would favor the male athlete, because men and women are not created equally in that department. But as soon as size/brute strength becomes a secondary factor (as in the case of shooting a basketball from a mid-range distance, chipping/putting (as opposed to driving) a golf ball, etc.) there is no real advantage for the male athlete at all.

It really depends on the sport, the country and a lot of things. In general, right now, in most sports, the top male athelete would probably defeat the top female athelete.
But look at things like golf -- I think it'd be entirely possible for men to be beaten by women. I'm not sure, but I think women marathoners are catching up with men.
Here in Japan, it seems like the women get more attention in international sports than men do. Women's volleyball is stronger, for example. And figure skating -- well, I think the ladies have the gentlemen beat almost hands-down in that area.
But I think you have a point in say, boxing or American football.

I want to point out that even in sports that don't require much physical strength, such as Curling, Dart Throwing, Golf or Bowling, the best players are men.
It is probably related to the fact that women are not being encouraged to play sports as a profession, even nowadays, when women are supposed to be equal to men. They still get frowned upon if they choose to play "male-related" games.
Either way, even in games like Chess or Backgammon, which require only mental skills, the best player (and I will go further to say that the top 50 players) would be of the male gender. I think it has something to do with the male drive to win, which is somehow enhanced, though I don't know exactly why.
