It would be rice, but since you were directed by your doctor, you should call him to get the correct amount (but its going to be a pretty small amount). For the most part you're not supposed to put it into a bottle (I'm guessing he recommended it for reflux) so that's why there are no directions for how to do it on the package. There are also formulas out there that already have rice as an additive so that may be something for you to look into.

Congratulations, are you sleeping all night? You don't mentioned how old is your baby. You want to start with a rice cerea,l Gerber is pretty good. Your ped. said bottles not bowls., 2 diff. things. Rice is a good starter because it rarely causes allergy reactions. You should try every product for at least several days, so if there is a reaction you will know imm. where it came from. Continue with fruits and vegetables. Always introducing new products while observing. The second choice for cereal would be oatmeal. Same thing watch for any reaction. Start by warming the milk add a spoon of cereal. If she is not sleeping through the entire night, more than likely she will now. You will need to enlarge the nipple. Be careful not to make it too big. Always check to see that is not too hot for her. I'm assuing your baby is on fluids. Have fun!

Rice is easiest for your baby to digest. They say when starting cereals, to start with rice. So that should be the same for in the bottle. As far as how much - you need just enough to thicken it a little. You don't want it to be like drinking a milkshake or anything. I used 1 1/2 - 2 baby formula scoops of cereal for a 6 oz bottle. You may need get the nipples that have the "x" slit on them so your baby can still drink it easily.

I would definitely check with your doctor for specific instructions, but here is what we do. We use rice cereal with formula in a bottle for our son, especially when he's teething (11 months now; started doing this 3-4 months ago). We experimented with amounts, and started putting in about a 1/8 cup cereal for 6-8 ounces of formula, and now just guess as we go. I think we're up to maybe 1/4 cup? We did not buy a special bottle but just cut one of our bottle nipples to make the hole larger. (But be careful doing this, as it's easy to make the hole too big and it all just dribbles out and the nipple is ruined. I recommend using small scissors, putting the tip of one sharp end in the existing hole, and pushing down a little bit to make the cut. Or, you can push the nipple tip together and make the smallest possible cut with the tips of the scissors - it will make a bigger cut than you'd expect, and you can always go bigger if you need to.)
Hope this helps! Good luck!

I would skip the rice bottles and go straight to the spoon if I were you. Alot of the old timers do it and that generation came out just fine. With a rice cereal bottle I found that my daughter strangled or kind of got choked even when the rice was very little. But, you are a Mom now go with your gut instinct, it usually isn't wrong. Good Luck and God Bless !!!

You start out with rice because it is the most gentle on the baby's tummy ( I have 2 kids). They sell special bottles for cereal or just mix a little bit into the bottle so the baby can still get it through the nipple. Hope this helps you:)

Why do you continue to see a pediatrician who obviously gives advice you don't agree with and doesn't even have time to answer your questions. If a doctor is going to tell you to put cereal in a bottle what, how much, and how often the minimum information they should tell you. Would he give you a prescription for antibiotics with no instructions?

Starting cereal will more than likely not cause your baby to gain weight. Generally the first thing suggested when a baby isn't gaining well is to stop giving solids and offer breastmilk/formula more often.

If this advice does not seem safe to you PLEASE get a different opinion.

"What can I do to increase my baby's weight gain?

There are several simple things that have been proven to help with weight gain:

* Stop or decrease solid foods, particularly if baby is younger than 6 months. Most solids foods have fewer calories and nutrients than breastmilk, plus they tend to replace (rather than add to) the higher-calorie, more nutritious breastmilk."

My son's doctor told me to never give my son cereal in a bottle. He said if he is old enough to eat cereal then don't be lazy and make him a bowl of cereal and feed it to him. My sons doctor tells it how it is sometimes....lol. So i did....my son was 4 months old when I started giving him rice cereal on a spoon he loved it! I mixed it with a little baby apple juice until it was a little like slightly thick soup and he has been eating me out of house and home since then!

Due to acid reflux, we had to start cereal in my daughters bottle. The doctor said you could put up to a table spoon per ounce of formula. I had to put 5 tbsp of cereal in a 5 oz bottle, or she would throw it up. I would just warm her bottle, add the cereal and stir it up.

the hardest part is getting it thru the nipple. I tried every brand of bottle and their nipples.. Avent bottles with the variable flow nipple is the ONLY one that works! Its made for thicker feeds. Good luck.

Usually we start them on rice cereal. The correct amount is 1oz cereal to a 4oz bottle. But you may want to check with your ped. to make sure.
