I have written poems just to express my emotion, so I will give this a try for you. It will have a religious tone to it, so I hope that's okay. I am sorry that your friend passed away.
To your friend:
As I weep, and try to say good bye
I recall all the times together you and I spent
I still cannot understand why
God has chosen to Heaven your soul be sent.
My memories of you will live on for a lifetime
and there will not remain a day you will not cross my mind
Someday I will join you in Heaven...your hand in mine
I will say a prayer for you... your peace to find.
Composed by: Shirley
God Bless you.

Sorry for your loss, I hope this helps.....
I did not die
Do not stand on my grave and weep
I am not there I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glints in the snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am a gentle Autumns rain
When you awaken in the morning hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
I am the birds in circled flight
I am the soft stars that shine at night
So do not stand on my grave and cry
I am not there.... I did not die

One interesting point is that there is an implicit comparison being made between the starfish and the human. The human, even with it's big, supposedly superior brain, cannot restore a limb the way a starfish can. And the starfish can nourish itself without a big stomach, unlike the human also. I believe that the speaker is questioning human superiority over animals.

If I can help one lonely soul
And bring new hope to him;
If I can reach one lofty goal
And never take the win.
If I can do one single deed
To help a friend of mine;
If I can lead in time of need
Sure, let my light so shine.
If I can ease one breaking heart
Or take away one pain,
Or cause one sorrow to depart
I'll not have lived in vain.

Thou, my friend,
who look at me from where thou rest,
or where thou doth frolic,
or where thou might suffer...
I miss thee,
and pledge thee
mine eternal love and remembrance.
I toast thy memories
both happy and sad.
I will tell my children about thee.
I'll think upon thee as I lay doun to rest.
I'll pray G-d bless thee and all thine.
See thee on the bright side of tomorrow, friend.
I'll see thee then.

My best friend died earlier this year, and I wrote him a poem, but it was particular in that it dealt with suicide. How did your friend die?
