When did we stop? FInd your local rennasiance faire. Plenty of people are still swinging at each other today :)
THat aside, I would like to point out that while there is a need in society for a 'warrior outlet' swordplay does not atuomatticly make one a better person. It's dedicating oneself to an honor or ethical code that does so. It's true that many have joined warrior groups to do so, but it's not the only way.
