First of all. "mental illness" is protected health information and can only be released with the consent of the person who has been "diagnosed." The background check process is a joke. People who submit to it are generally law abiding citizens. If I am a criminal, I can get whatever weapon I need on the street, without a background check.

Thr problem i see...

Is there a mental exam every 6 months or so for signs? If a rational person for example loses his/her job, spouse leaves , gets hit hard with alamony or such other event yes sometimes persons snap but do you go try and conviscate the guns after such an event? Also there are more than a few unstable personalities who are not a mental disorder , also who defines what normal is for that matter?

I believe that any psychiatric or criminal behavior should prevent someone from owning a firearm for say a period of ten years. I think that if after ten years or so there has been no further incidents, they should have to submit to an evaluation before being able to. I don't know if it will ever be that way, but that's my opinion.

i believe that there is really no way to stop people that have these sort of intentions, whether or not he could legally obtain a gun wouldn't really make that big of a difference.
