The vertical shaft single cylinder Briggs aren't real great at top end and like throwing rods through the block.
Bump up to a 12 hp V-twin.

You might be able to find an older mower that needs carburator work and fix it a lot cheaper than buying a new aftermarket engine.

Here is the problem. You want a racing engine cheap. The old engines out there with high horse power have splash type oil lubercation. That is fine for yard work but for racing you really need to make sure your engine gets its oil (life blood). That means a twin piston OHV engine and that is not cheap.. Briggs and Stratton and Kohler.

Find you a good running motor for you mower with lots of power....now take and find you a pulley for the rear end that is approx and inch smaller in diameter and get a new drive belt and your standard low hp motor will now be able to come off of the corners a lot faster and harder.... take the left side of the rear axle and slot the holes where it bolts to the body and move it to the back of the slot....this will allow you to corner faster which will give you more speed for the straightaway....then hang on and go for it...

No such thing! If you want to avoid BIG headaches in the future, buy a Kohler or Briggs & Stratton. It may cost a little more now, but a LOT LESS LATER!!
