Everyone gets a Group B strep test. Not everyone has it. The test does not hurt, and if you have it, it does not effect you. However, if you do have it, you will need antibiotics during labor to prevent complications to your baby.

Roughly 1/3 of women test positive for Group B strep. It is just a swab, doesn't hurt. You normally have this bacteria in your intestinal system, but some women still get it on the outside. One suggested preventative is to remember to always wipe front to back when using the toilet.

The problem with Group B strep is that it can cause the baby to be very sick at birth. If you are positive for Group B, you will be given antibiotics when you arrive at the hospital. Currently, there are some studies going on as to whether problems can be reduced by giving antibiotics earlier, but I don't know the status of that. For more info, see the site below. While not common (8000 babies infected annually vs. 4 million births), this was a primary cause of death of newborns until recently.

Everyone gets a group B strep test done at 36 weeks. They swab your vagina and anus (sounds really bad, but it's like a Q-tip). If you're positive it just means that you have to have a special IV during labour. I had it and it was fine. Don't worry.
It is something that can come and go. I asked my doctor if it was something I've always had and she said no, and she also told me I might not have it if I have another baby one day. It's just a bacteria that your body can carry from time to time. It's hit and miss and there's nothing you can do to prevent it.

it doesn't hurt..they just swab you and by the time you get it done..you have been to the doctor enough and are so pregnant you dont much care..i was strep b positive which does add some stress b/c if you are positive you have to make sure you get a certain amount of medicine in your system before you actually deliver the baby..strep b doesnt harm adults..some go on w/ it and have no idea.but it can be harmful to a newborn so they just make sure you get the medicine..good luck

Yes, now everyone gets a strep culture. They swab your cervix with a culture, and it doesn't hurt.
Many women carry strep without symptoms, and the baby can get a devastating infection from it.
If it comes back positive, they will give you antibiotics in labor [ in your IV ] to protect the baby from getting it.

I had it with my first pregnancy but not my second. It is a very common infection. No, it doesn't hurt, I didn't know I had it until they told me I did. All I had to do was have an antibiotic in my IV when I delivered my son, and get the final dose after he was born.

Just had mine done a couple of days ago. No it does not hurt at all, and yes all pregnant women get it done around their 36th week of pregnancy. They just swab you to get a quick sample, and then you're done. Not even as bad as a pap smear.

no, it does NOT hurt. i have group b strep. it never goes away. i dont even know what it is really. my doctor never really explained it to me. they give medication to you during labor so you wont infect the baby with it. but no, it does not hurt and you cant even tell you have it.

I just had mine done Thursday, I was not looking forward to it and it was NOTHING!!! It took probably 10 seconds, it is just 2 swabs one just inside the vagina and one swab a little lower. Definately nothing to worry about.
