Think of all your interests & ask yourself if any of those could be expanded into a business. Just keep in mind...what's your expertise? What are your interests? What could you imagine yourself doing?

By researching the prospect of starting your own business -- what it entails, what you need to know, helpful hints, etc -- you'll feel better prepared to take that plunge.

I found some book titles that are relevant to your specific question:

* Generation, Inc: The 100 Best Businesses for Young Entrepreneurs by Elina Furman, Leah Furman
* The Young Entrepreneur's Guide to Starting and Running a Business (Completely Revised and Updated) by Steve Mariotti
* The Young Entrepreneur's Edge: Using Your Ambition, Independence, and Youth to Launch a Successful Business (Princeton Review Series) by Jennifer Kushell
* Upstart Start-Ups!: How 34 Young Entrepreneurs Overcame Youth, Inexperience, and Lack of Money to Create Thriving Businesses by Ron Lieber

I also posted some article links in the source box.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Do something you love and know about. If you love something learn about it. Then, make sure its in demand as you said.

Once, you found something. Make a business plan. Be sure its detailed. And, you can change the plan, as you go. Just try to stay on a plan. Always. Some plans are 10 pages, 17 pages, it depends.

Make sure all the legal things Are taken care of. What taxes will you pay. Register a business as a DBA, LLC, S corp or other corps. With letters in front of them. Etc. Etc.

As a whole, roofing probably would not be in high demand, right now. Some housing markets are falling. And, will continue to fall. With interest rates going higher. However, you may live in a area. With 2 roofers and 100,000 houses. This would be excellent. But, my town is covered with contractors.

I don't really have an idea for you. On what business to start. I don't know, how much you want to invest. Or, the market your in. But, as a whole services will always be good. They are inflation tolerant.

We don't know you. You could be ready to start a business. Despite, what others say here

There is nothing wrong with business owners earning money by creating jobs and providing services or materials to clients. However, why should the ultra rich be allowed to give their children enough money to live off of the interest for the rest of their lives without ever having to work a day in their life? At the least you should have an estate tax and capital gains tax rate that is equivalent to standard income tax rates. In addition, those making more than $100 million per year should not have tax loopholes that keep them from paying the same 30% tax rate that I pay.

I recommend you start with a home business. It's an excellent and low risk way to learn how to run your own business. I have a home business that is taking the athletic world by storm because the product is proving to cut their recovery time in half and give them the stamina they need. It costs just under $200 USD to get started, but the earning potential is unlimited. Your bookwork is done for you, you get a free website that is maintained, as well as full training.
I think it's an easier and less expensive way to learn about business and you can transfer those skills to any business you want.

One of the first things you need to do is get an LLC, or Limited Liability Corporation. And you need to get a DBA, or a name for your company-"Doing Business As". Start your business doing something you enjoy doing, or something that's unique, but you see a need for in your community. You'll need insurance, you'll need to get bonded, and assemble some trusted friends that would be ready willing and able to become your employees, and make you money. Good Luck with that.
