The cold war began near the end of WWII around 1943/45 when the allies were making agreements about the future of post war Europe which it became evident they didn't agree on to around 1991 (Gorbachev's Perestroika and Glastnost)

Total War is usually used to explain the first total war which was WWI 1914-1918
