My brother and I have been arguing about this for days. Does anyone know if The Godfather does have anything to do with Al Capone?

It doesn't. It's based on the 5 major crime families in New York in the 40's and 50 's . Capone was in the 20's and 30's .There are no references at all to Capone in Godfather I or II . All the main characters in the Godfather are lously based on real people . The charactor of Moe Greene was based on Bugsy Seigal . In real life Seigal did have dealingd with Capone but it was never mentioned in the movies ......The Untoachables is based on Capone ,maybe that is what you may be confusing it with .

The only connection Capone has to any of the movie in real life was; he worked for Johnny Torrio who was one of the big mob families in New York when Al was young. Al came to Chicago with Johnnies blessing around 1920 but I don't have all that information at hand right now.

I am not sure if Torrio was mentioned in the Godfather movie or not. So basically, Alphonse got his start in New York but came to Chicago as a fairly young mobster.

Capone was Chicago based and Mario Puzo's fictional story is based on New York La Costra Nostra. Organized crime is a link, however Capone was not the inspiration for the Godfather series.

No. Al Capone was a mobster from Chicago, Illinois and was not close to being a mob boss or Godfather.
