Sometimes turtles just dig for the sake of digging. In nature sometimes their food is under the surface and they feel that they need to dig to find it. Depending on your turtles size you may want to add some small guppies, goldfish, or rosy reds. They'd be able to eat these at any time. I also suggest feeding them in the morning so that they have all day to digest their food and work off the fat gained. Night feeding can lead to obesity which leads of course to other health problems, even in turtles. If they are over 5" in diameter then start to feed them every other day, if not then keep feeding them every day. And I'm going to give you the rough idea that your turtle is a male due to the tail description. If the turtle is 4" in diameter then you can accurately sex it but if not, then it's really not very acurate. The for sure way to tell is to look at the cloca (anus) and if it's about 1/2 out on the tail or fairly far from the body, then it's a male. If the cloca is very close to the body then it is female.

You do not state the size of tank the turtles are kept in. Very important for their shell and health for the tank to be spacious, that is according to turtle size. If turtles shell are 4"-5" long, the minimum size tank is a 29 gallon. Filtered water is also a must. Water turtles love Anacharis, which is found in any pet store, also love earthworms, crickets, wax worms and super worms. Be careful about feeding commercially available live fish by keeping a quarantine tank just for them.

1. Turtles don't eat at night. Feed them in the morning.
2. Diggers are basically trying to escape- trying to figure out how to get through the force field surrounding them (they are confused by glass).
To prevent digging, try putting a visual barrier in the corner it is working in or try a bigger tank. (Bigger tanks are always good!).
