We use historical maps because it is important for research. It ties history with the profession. The purpose can range from histoic culture to the developement of ways of thinking. I do GIS analysis, so I don't have much to do with maps before 1990, but sometimes an older map gets thrown in. It also helps with develpoing better and more efficient maps.
