Mine got upset w/ me saying I really got it for me...It was a nice Italian food cookbook that I saw in the bookstore while shopping. I thought it would be fun to make stuff not really meaning for her to do all the work....How would you feel? Would you care? Would you like it or dislike?

Heh!
I am so glad that I am the woman and I'm married to a man. I'd hate to be a guy shopping for a woman. We are soooo hard to figure out or predict.

Me? I'd love an Italian cookbook. I'd love ANY book. I love Italian food and I love to cook.

But, oh yeah, I know my friends and sisters and most of them would bonk their hubbies or boyfriends on the head with the cookbook.

Personally, I would rather have a thoughtful PRACTICAL gift than an expensive useless gift. My hubby has never bought me flowers because he knows I would bonk him over the head with them. Flowers look nice for a few days then die. I know most women love them ... I don't. I'd rather he bought me a new evergreen tree or an elderberry tree to plant in the backyard. I don't need expensive jewelry ... I rarely dress up to go anywhere. My job is a t-shirt/blue jeans job and my idea of fun is hiking or biking ... don't need diamonds or gold for that.

So, how would I feel about a cookbook? My hubby would get hugs and kisses and a big thank you.

Maybe next year you can ask her to give you her list to Santa and take that as a clue .....?????

I HAVE gotten this gift before. Let me tell you how I felt.
I felt like he was saying he was sick of the food I made him. I felt as if he really doesn't know what "I" like. If I were the type to love cooking, this would be a great gift. I cook extrordiarly well, he said that's why he thought it would be a good gift. The explanation made it a little better, but gifts shouldn't need an explanation. If he wanted to cook together or wanted me to cook something new, he could have simply bought the book any 'ol day, not for Christmas (yes I did get it for Christmas).

I'd love it but I love to cook. Was this a "hint" gift?? Did you really get it for you? I think cooking together is one of the most romantic ways to spend time. Explain this to her, set aside some time to work up some magic in the kitchen one night and then surprise her over dinner with a gift that she LOVES. Maybe that'll get you outta the gift doghouse! I'm not all about romantic gifts because I'm a practical person. My husband got me a new leaf blower once and I was thrilled! My girlfriends think this is nuts because they are less practical. I love my leaf blower....
You need to listen to her gift "hints" a little better. Get something that you know she would never buy for herself...something she's mentioned in passing...those are the best gifts..

Good luck :)

LOL...I like cooking so it ould be great for me..This Christmas I got the new Rachael Ray cookbook. I was fine with that..But I guess they do tell men not to buy anything for the kitchen or cleaning as a gift for the wife unless they asked for it.

Much better than any gift I received from my husband. One year I got a spot light to plug into my cigarette lighter in my car. Never had a need for it and it took up the front seat, so I got rid of it. Another year I actually got a set of wrenches, they were just like the ones he wanted. Guess who ended up using them? I would have like getting a cook book. If you give her a little something personal to go with it, she should love the gift.

No offense hon, but a cookbook for Christmas is about as exciting as a vacuum cleaner for her birthday. There are some things women just don't want as presents. I don't know your wife, but if she's upset, something tells me you ought to get a little more in tune with her and listen for those subtle hints on what she really wants so this doesn't happen again.

It depends - if she's really into cooking (or likes to make Italian food) then I think it would be a great gift.... if she doesn't really like to cook or have the time, then it might look like you're trying to hint that you want (or expect) her to cook more, and in that case it would be a very bad gift. It really depends on her!

Me? I'd love it!

I absolutely love to cook, and cookbooks are a way of learning how to cook different things. I wouldn't be insulted at all..of course it wouldn't have hurt to throw in something a little romantic or frivolous.

Hey, my wife and I have given each other cookbooks as gifts on several occasions. We both like to cook and do, what can I say? No Italian for me, tho...

personally...i'd love it. i love cooking. i especially love cooking for my husband. nothing makes me more happy then watching my husband almost eat the plate itself because he liked something i made. and then to make something i never made before! but that's my turn on. i tried hinting at cooking supplies for gifts but he sees no sense in getting me something that benefits him, which is so freaking weird. but then i love cooking. your wife may not have the same sentiment as it so seems. what you could have done is set up the cookbook as a "you pick the dinners and i make the meal" type of coupon book. that would have been more "present for the wife" type of thing. but hey...maybe she needed something more girly and less wifey.
