Dude, you make a lot of good points. The real issue in the argument is that being a Christian requires two things: faith and works. However, a huge part of being a Christian is that Christians are human, and humans sin - all the time, willingly. That is the third part of the argument that needs to be involved before we can explain the whole mess. Let's start at the beginning: being a Christian implies that a person has faith in the Christian God and Jesus as the savior. All you need do is a believe and, in one sense of the word, you are a Christian. The most lucid reference to this comes from Ephesians 2:8, to whit: "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,..." It is your faith that makes you a Christian, but not what I call a full Christian. To be fully Christian requires more than faith. Faith without works (doing good stuff) is called in scripture "dead faith." Thus, true Christianity is both a faith and a practice. For more on this, see James 2:14-26. The most lucid line is James 2:26, to whit "For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also." The third part of the argument is that people sin all the time. There are no gradations of sin: gluttony is a sin, murder is a sin, calling someone a jerkwad is a sin. However, God/Jesus accept that we are sinners and love us anyway. (BTW, God loves everyone, not just the believers.) Since people are so terribly imperfect, it becomes harder to define hypocrisy. Since all people are imperfect sinners, Christians can still be Christians if they have faith and do some works. In my humble (ha!) opinion hypocrisy comes in when people profess that being a Christian makes them superior to others OR when they say that they act in a "Christian manner" but disobey the two greatest commandments. Per Jesus, the two greatest commandments are explained in Matthew 22:36-39, to whit: 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” 37 Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ So, you can be a Christian if you believe and do some works. Where people go wrong (again, IMHO) is when they are not loving. Being loving is likened to the greatest commandment, loving God. So, I believe that jerkwads can still be Christians, they just miss the biggest point, the point on which all the Law and all the prophets hang: you gotta have love. This is a huge problem within the church and it really ticks me off. There is _no_ room for judging others as sinners. Jesus makes this very clear several times, most notably when He tells a crowd that those among them who are without sin should stone the prostitute to death, and when He tells people to not point out their neighbor's sins when their own sins are even bigger. (It's the text about not pointing out the speck in your neighbor's eye when you have a plank in your own.) So, if this doesn't earn me a BA, I will curse you like the sinner I am. Well, not really, but I hope it helps.
