There is a differance. Back in the 1980's, they were both in fashion, the hard rockers and the pretty boy rockers. Who stood out for you and why??

Tesla did kinda because while they were lumped in with the hair bands they really weren't one. They were pretty much a straight forward rock band, with heavier guitars, never mind the fact the bass player actually wrote a song for MOD kinda, kills the hair band thing.

Back in the 80's, it was Def Leppard and Metallica. Nowadays, it's still Metallica plus Slipknot, Korn, Evanescence, and Nirvana.

I really enjoyed nirvana, iggy pop, and aerosmith...in today's era, i really like the work of head automatica, good charlotte, and the used.
